The benefits of reading a good book are endless. From increasing vocabulary to enhancing writing skills, reading books opens many cerebral doors. With this in mind, here’s a toast to us book lovers: To those who when small read by flashlight, to those who create pictures in the clouds, to those who feel most alive in their imagination, carry on, brilliant souls, carry on.
• Brain Power = Good Energy
One of the biggest benefits of reading books is boosting our brain power. Neuroscientists have proven reading improves brain function by exposing us to vocabulary we might not otherwise use. It also improves our literacy skills, making us better writers.
• Relaxation = Good Energy
It’s a proven fact reading is one of the best ways to relax and reduce stress levels. Opening a book propels us into a literary world that distracts us from daily stressors. Studies show reading can reduce stress by up to 68%. Psychologists have found reading a book for a mere six minutes actually eases tension in our muscles and heart.
• Empathy = Good Energy
A good book increases our ability to empathize. By detecting how the characters are feeling, we thereby experience those feelings ourselves. The stories we read allow us to feel connected to something bigger than ourselves. Considering today’s often self-centered culture, this is a big deal.
• Creativity = Good Energy
Reading stimulates the right side of our brain, enabling our creativity to run wild. Albert Einstein summed it up well by stating, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For while knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create.”
All things considered, replacing scrolling through our news feed with perusing a good book is a wise intention indeed.
